Matt Nathanson Announces Last Of The Great Pretenders Tour

Matt Nathanson has announced his North American tour with special guest Joshua Radin beginning this fall. The string of dates, kicking off on September 20th in Portland, OR at the Crystal Ballroom includes stops in Los Angeles, CA at the Wiltern Theater October 3rd; Oakland, CA at the Fox Theater October 4th and New York’s Terminal 5 on October 30.  Tour dates listed below with additional dates to be announced soon.  Visit www.mattnathanson.com for updates. The tour follows the July 16th release of Matt’s highly anticipated new album, Last of the Great Pretenders. The new album’s first single “Mission Bells” is already #10 on the Triple A radio chart.  The Hitchcock inspired video for “Mission Bells” can be viewed here. Last of the Great Pretenders is the follow up release to 2011’s Modern Love which debuted at #17 on The Billboard 200.

Produced by Mike Viola and Jake Sinclair, Last of the Great Pretenders marks a dramatic progression for the acclaimed artist, who has created a richer and deeper work both musically and lyrically than any of his previous LPs – and that’s saying something considering the already rarefied level of his writing and performing. Songs like “Earthquake Weather,” “Kill the Lights,” “Kinks Shirt,” “Sunday New York Times” and first single “Mission Bells” are precisely cinematic as Nathanson stirs the material with deftly placed pop-cultural references and vivid details drawn from his keen observations of everyday life, while topping each song with an emphatic and seductive chorus hook.

Based in San Francisco, Matt Nathanson has evolved into one of the premier songwriters and dynamic performers on the music scene today. His 2007 album Some Mad Hope (his first for Vanguard) yielded the smash single “Come on Get Higher,” which has sold more than 2 million copies to date, as well as the subsequent hits “Car Crash,” “Falling Apart” and “All We Are.” The success of Some Mad Hope earned Nathanson a coveted spot as a VH1 “You Oughta Know” artist, while also resulting in appearances on such national television shows as David Letterman, Ellen, Conan O’Brien, Leno, Jimmy Kimmel, Craig Ferguson, Dancing with the Stars, Rachael Ray and The CMA Awards to name a few.  Additionally, his songs have been featured in numerous film and TV programs, including Good Morning America, NCIS, Private Practice, American Idol, X Factor, Vampire Diaries, American Pie and 90210. Modern Love, his previous studio album, debuted at#17 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart and topped the iTunes Pop Chart. It featured the hit singles “Faster” and “Run” – the latter featuring Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush. Nathanson’s legendary live shows, in which he displays a chic comedic flair, have resulted in sold-out tours across the U.S., Canada and Australia.

Barenaked Ladies’ New Album ‘Grinning Streak’ Debuts at #10 on Billboard Top 200!

VANGUARD DEBUT MARKS FIRST TOP TEN ENTRY SINCE 2003 / NEW ALBUM MARKS FOURTH TOP 10 DEBUT FOR THE MULTI-PLATINUM POP ROCK BAND.

BNL TEAMING WITH BEN FOLDS FIVE AND GUSTER FOR 2013 “LAST SUMMER ON EARTH TOUR” / TOUR LAUNCHES JUNE 17 IN DALLAS

It’s the BARENAKED LADIES’ 25th anniversary and the multi-platinum pop rock group has much to celebrate, including the arrival of new album GRINNING STREAK, which debuted at #10 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart selling 25,974 copies in its first week. The band’s first Vanguard release marks their first top ten debut since 2003 and fourth top ten debut overall for the radiant Ladies, who continue to not just survive, but thrive. The album’s breakout success showcases the new single “Odds Are,” which shot to No. 2 on the iTunes Rock Songs Chart. The band recently performed on both The Today Show and Live with Kelly and Michael.

Fans can also catch the band performing the single—along with a few surprises and plethora of classic hits—during the upcoming “Last Summer On Earth Tour,” which kicks off June 17th at the Verizon Theatre in Dallas, TX, and will hit 30 arenas and amphitheaters across the country (tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com and Livenation.com and full itinerary is below). Following last year’s “Last Summer On Earth Tour,” which Rolling Stone called “one of the ten hottest summer package tours of 2012” and Entertainment Weekly spotlighted on their “2012 Summer Must List,” this year sees BNL (guitarist/vocalist Ed Robertson, bassist/vocalist Jim Creeggan, keyboardist/vocalist Kevin Hearn and drummer/vocalist Tyler Stewart) teaming with Ben Folds Five and Guster.

The songs on GRINNING STREAK unfold with the blend of immediacy, tunefulness and witty sophistication that made such BNL hits as “Pinch Me, “Brian Wilson,” “If I Had $1,000,000” and the chart-topping “One Week” modern-day classics. “Pop is a form that I love—it can be high-energy and intricate,” says Robertson of the genre the band has championed throughout the last quarter century. “When I think of pop music, I think of the Cars and Squeeze—interesting melodic rock is what I gravitate toward and what I’m always striving for. I want guitar-heavy pop/rock that’s intelligent, evocative and thought-provoking. I want it to be singable and relatable, and I want there to be other layers in there for the people who want to go deeper—because not everybody does. I’ve heard so many times, ‘I love you guys ’cause your songs are just fun and easygoing.’ And I’m like, ‘I’m glad you enjoy them, but there’s a dark underbelly that you haven’t mined.’”

Indeed, there’s much more to the Barenaked Ladies than initially meets the ear. Suck on the candy-coated surfaces of Robertson’s songs long enough and you never know what you’ll encounter in their “emotional centers,” as Robertson puts it.

He wrestled with the songs for the new album over an extended period as he plumbed the depths of his psyche in search of just those emotional centers. Along the way, Robertson experienced periods of stress, though not to the degree he’d endured while writing the material for the band’s previous studio album, 2010’s All in Good Time. That one was their first project following the departure of Steven Page, who’d founded the band with Robertson in 1988, reconfiguring the BNL as a four-piece.

“This is the second record since all of that turmoil,” Robertson notes, “but it’s still a part of what we’re going through and what informs who we are. On the last record, there were some songs that were directly about the band split, but this record is much more about the emotional rebuilding after that process. Looking back on the maelstrom of all that upheaval, I wanted to convey a sense of hope, reconciliation and healing with these songs. ‘Off His Head,’ for example, is about pushing through difficulty. There’s a double chorus at the end that I flipped, because I didn’t want it to end with, ‘Wishing you were dead.’ That’s part of being exasperated and at your wit’s end. But what I like about this song is that it says you just do it. You think it’s hopeless, but there’s a reason you’re pushing through it. The song says you can let all these things ruin you, or you can take it on the chin and stand up again.”

Don’t miss your chance to catch Barenaked Ladies live.

Writing in the VILLAGE VOICE, Hilary Hughes says: “…love and lust-lorn brutalities break from anything you’d ever hear from Martha Reeves and the Vandelles or The Supremes or even Amy Winehouse. Yes, Baby Caught The Bus has a few sunny, swinging hits you can bop along to (the title track; ‘Frankie;’ ‘I’ll Be Fine’), but the songs with teeth—‘Love Letter,’ the record’s first single, ‘She Plays Up,’ ‘You Don’t Owe Me Nothing’—are the ones that leave bite marks, the kind that bruise and take too long to heal. ‘I want to write what I want you to do to me in a letter’ is hell of a statement to open the record with, and that’s just what Browne belts at the onset/With ‘She Plays Up,’ Browne takes to the microphone to eviscerate the other woman that’s doing her best to thwart a relationship that isn’t hers. ‘I don’t want to lose you/to a floozy who’ll use you’ she wails as a sinister bass line and creeping percussion overwhelm her, striking a chord that feels completely present in its brashness and no-bullshit mentality. The horns, handclaps and girl group vocals may be common soul staples, but this angst and the fearless desire to cast it out are entirely theirs—and it’s one American audiences have been vocally fiending for since the Bangin’ Rackettes officially landed.” (May 21, 2013)

Expect the group that the New York Music Daily described as “the great long-lost collaboration between David Lynch and John Waters” (April 1, 2013) to announce a late summer U.S. tour soon.

CLAIRY BROWNE & THE BANGIN’ RACKETTES and their debut album BABY CAUGHT THE BUS are gaining strong praise from the media. Check out a some of the critical reaction so far:

“Rich in harmony…” —Scott Simon, NPR “Weekend Edition”, (May 25, 2013)

“Big, soulful and undeniably retro…” —Phoebee Magee, BUST (March 2013).

“In the era of Auto-Tune and prepackaged pop stars, Australian band Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Rackettes is a refreshing dose of real, raw talent, plus showmanship skills to boot.” —Marcy Medina, WOMEN’S WEAR DAILY-WWD (May 24, 2013)

“The entire band gave us a show full of sultry ballads and clap-a-long jams. The new single ‘Love Letter’ was a highlight as was the killer encores with great sax solos by Darcy McMulty. Browne won me over with the medley of ‘The Boy Is Mine/She Plays Up to You’ which momentarily broke the 60s spell with a 90s guilty pleasure” —Debi Del Grande, LA RECORD, (4/11/13)

“Watching this band was like discovering the great long-lost collaboration between David Lynch and John Waters.” —Thomas Gerbasi, NEW YORK MUSIC DAILY, (April 1, 2013).

“…skillful blend of classic rhythm and blues, soulful jazz, blues and even some doo-wop vocal parts.” —PATRIOT LEDGER, (March 28, 2013).

“Melbourne’s Clairy Brown & The Bangin’ Rackettes is the best stuff to come along in decades. The dancing part of the Bangin’ Rackettes, who also sing, rivals the Raelettes or Ikettes. The instrumental contributors seem to have gobbled  up all the grits, guts and soul from every big name ‘60s soul and r&b headliner, spitting  it back out with their own twisted, banging spin on it while retaining the integrity of the original practitioners. This thing opens with a bang. …Baby Caught The Bus is a treasure trove for R&B lovers, a ‘60s time capsule, a show and dance ensemble concept  that’s been away far too long. Import this one to your collection immediately for maximum satisfaction.” —Grant Britt, NO DEPRESSION, (March 20, 2013)

“Browne’s powerhouse singing fuels Baby Caught the Bus, but she’s only the most visible piece of this nine-piece Aussie aggregation, which contains three Bangin’ Rackettes backup singers, and a five-piece backing band that includes baritone sax master Darcy McNulty, whose blatty honks chase Browne’s vocals all around this eminently danceable set of grooves. …Browne makes the most of her Dusty Springfield-like alto on slow burners (‘Vicious Cycle’) 1950s-style ballads (‘Far Too Late’) and scorching 1960s soul stormers (‘Yellow Bird’). Even if all else fails, the pinpoint precision and sassy drive of ‘Love Letter’ will warm even the coldest of hearts. Put simply, Baby Caught the Bus is nothing but fun, a full-fledged party record whose reverence to its sources never gets in the way of nine people having a musical blast and sharing their joy with the rest of us.” —Sam Gnerre, THE DAILY BREEZE (May 20, 2013)
